I vividly remember the first time I walked through the grocery store, looked at ingredient labels and actually understood what I was reading. Sugar, insane additives and preservatives I couldn’t even pronounce. It was terrifying and freeing at the same time. Terrifying because I finally realized what was going on in our food system and freeing because I also realized I don’t have to blindly take part in that anymore. Store bought ranch was a big one that served as a wakeup call to me. Now, I pretty much always have some homemade ranch in the fridge. Ranch that has ingredients I can pronounce.
When I started eating Paleo, not very long ago, there wasn’t any ranch available to purchase to my knowledge. Now, we’re #blessed to be able to run to Whole Foods or hop online and order not one but two kinds of Paleo and Whole30 ranch dressings.
Tessemae’s offers ranch dressing in zesty ranch and creamy ranch flavors (don’t buy it here, it’s crazy expensive, just showing you what I’m talking about). Sometimes at Whole Foods you can score a good deal on these when they’re on sale. The other option for bottled ranch is from Primal Kitchen Foods. These are obviously going to be the more expensive ways to do keep ranch a part of your life but thankfully it’s super easy to make homemade ranch dressing yourself. It’s only a few ingredients after you’ve made the mayo base.
Or, you could also purchase mayo from either Tessemae’s or Primal Kitchen Foods, too. I buy a few jars of PKF mayo at a time just to have on hand for when I don’t want to make my own homemade mayo. Either way works just fine. You’ll just want to make sure when you’re making your own mayo that you use a light olive oil. You could also use avocado oil. A heavier oil will cause your mayo to not turn out the greatest.
Once you’ve got mayo handy, the homemade ranch dressing takes all of 3 minutes to whip up. If you have fresh dill on hand you could use that instead of dried dill. Store your ranch in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container. I typically just use a mason jar with these lids that I got for like 2 bucks.
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1/2 cup Paleo mayo (homemade or purchased)
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoon dill, or more if you prefer a stronger taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (do not use garlic salt!) or 1 crushed garlic clove
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- A pinch of salt and pepper
- Whisk all ingredients together until the mayo and coconut milk is well combined
- Store in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container
- Double the recipe for a larger batch for meal prepping or parties!
